Over the past few years inflammatory disorders like allergies and eczemas have rapidly increased. The intolerance of sensitive skin to many external stimuli (environment), mostly resulting from a defective skin barrier function (Unhealthy skin). Discomfort, fragility, dehydration, scaliness and redness are all characteristics of sensitive skin that is lacking an effective defence system.

Our bodies are in a continued state of flux in which tissues have a varied cell turnover rate – some faster and other slower in which older cells are discarded and replaced by newer ones.  As cells age they become damaged through every day wear and tear and therefore need to be renewed. The recycling of nucleotides from dying cells is only 60% effective and time and energy consuming. Some of the most important systems cannot produce their own nucleotides such as some brain cells, cells coming from the bone marrow, like immune cells and red blood cells, and some cells of the skin and gut flora. Other cells, like cells of the intestinal wall, can produce nucleotides but not enough to cover their needs.  This results in the need to supplement nucleotides orally and topically.

Dr. Juanita Kilian, a distinguished pharmacist at the University of North West, South Africa, where she obtained her Master's Degree in Dermaceutical Product Development, has completed her PhD in Transdermal Delivery Technology at the University of London, School of Pharmacy. Dr. Kilian has dedicated herself to the study of transdermal delivery systems and has made unique research findings in the various formulations of the field, which has significantly influenced the development of the DrK Dermal Health Care product line.

Dr. Kilian is also a researcher and author of several of the most recognized and influential educational materials used in teaching in more than 25 countries.

During her career, Dr. Kilian has worked in many locations around the world, such as South Africa, Africa, the United Kingdom, Scandinavia, the United Arab Emirates, Russia and various parts of Europe. She has been actively involved in research and has constantly updated herself on the latest technology in skin care research and dermaceutical chemistry. She has a passionate interest in the development of effective skincare products.

Today, Dr. Kilian is based in Pretoria, South Africa, where she is the Director of CosmoPharm Product Design (Ply) Ldt, a prominent dermaceutical consulting company. She has designed and developed the DrK Dermal Health Care product line with an intense focus on skin wellness and healing processes.

When protein is broken down, peptides are formed. These peptides can combine with amino acids to form more protein. However, the fact that peptides are present clearly shows that protein has been broken down and needs to be replaced. The skin supports the good bacteria in their fight against the bad bacteria by producing antimicrobial peptides.

When we are exposed to environmental aggression, the production of these peptides in the skin decreases. DrK Dermal Health Care products deliver these peptides to the skin, where they combine with amino acids to form more proteins. This strengthens and increases the function of the skin barrier and thus the immune system.

Our bodies are in an ongoing state of change where tissues have a varied rate of cell turnover, some faster and some slower, with older cells being discarded and replaced by new cells. As cells age, they are damaged by everyday use and therefore need to be replaced.
Cells that are used more regularly are replaced at a higher rate, e.g. cells that form intestinal villi are replaced every 3-5 days, cells lining the stomach live for only 5 days, skin cells are replaced approximately every 27 days and red blood cells live for only 120 days.

To replace a cell - cell turnover - an exact copy (replica) of the genetic information stored in DNA needs to be created. It is essential for the well-being of our bodies that this replication is done without errors, as otherwise this can result in loss of immunity, disease or even genetic mutations. To ensure correct replication, each cell must have access to a pool of freely available, relevant nucleotide bases from which to build the copy, as well as access to RNA and various enzymes to stimulate and supply the energy (ATP/GIP) for these reactions.

The double helix is opened at critical positions to allow the capture and exposure of the DNA sequence that needs to be duplicated. The two complementary halves are exposed so that the freely available nucleotides can be matched in their relevant pairs.

As these nucleotides can only line up in a complementary way, this ensures that the two new DNA strands are identical to the original template. Only now can the cell division process begin.

It is clear that without a balanced pool of nucleotides, available and ready for use, cellular replication may be delayed or suspended indefinitely, until the necessary nucleotide is produced or made available for use in a specific position.
